Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Emmerich as a director, but I find that Tatum a likable screen presence and the film looked entertaining, so I'll probably head to see it at some point over the summer for some escapist fun. It won't be something I rush out to see, though. That being said, I can already tell that I'm going to get tired of the comparisons to Olympus Has Fallen. This isn't the first time two very similar films were released within a few months from each other. Hell, last year saw the release of two Snow White films- one in March, one in June. Sound familiar? So, let's just stop the comparisons right now, okay?
After the jump, check out more news including a red band trailer for an upcoming film and more.
- The red band trailer for Michael Bay's Pain and Gain hit the web tonight. The film follows three body builders who find themselves in the midst of a kidnapping spree gone horribly wrong. The first trailer looked terrible, but the red band trailer made the film look a lot more entertaining- though I'm still not holding out much hope. This is a film that could go from entertaining to annoying very quickly and unless reviews convince me otherwise, I probably won't be seeing this in theaters.
- Along with releasing the trailer for White House Down, Roland Emmerich revealed some interesting information regarding the highly anticipated sequels to the film that put him on the map, Independence Day. The two sequels, ID: Forever Part I and Part II, are currently in pre-production and will follow a wave of "reinforcement aliens" who attack the world due to a distress signal sent out by the aliens in the first film. Personally, I was not a fan of Independence Day but I know many people are and they will have a lot to look forward to when the film hits theaters sometime in the near future.
- It was announced recently that a remake of Escape From New York, the John Carpenter directed cult classic, is in development and that producers are looking to Jason Statham and Tom Hardy to fill in the shoes and don the eye patch of Snake Plissken, originally played by Kurt Russell. I have yet to see the original film, nor it's sequel, but a remake to a cult classic doesn't sound like too great an idea. That being said, I hope Hardy turns the role down (if he is indeed offered it) as I'd like to see him take more challenging roles.
- Finally, the voice cast for Disney's Planes, the godawful looking spin-off Cars, was announced. Aside from the already announced Dane Cook, celebrities lending their voice to the film include Roger Craig Smith, Carlos Alazraqui, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, along with Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer, who will play F-18 fighter jets in a nod to their iconic film Top Gun. The film, which will hit theaters on August 9th, was originally planned to go straight to DVD. Needless to say, I will not be seeing it.
The advantage i see in an Independence Day sequel (or two, in this case) is that its main cast, Jeff Goldblum, Will Smith, and Bill Pullman do not age ever. Creepy, but convenient. Wish i could say the same for Star Wars VII almost all of which's main cast has aged horribly and grotesquely, with the exception of Harrison Ford. So i guess, for the moment, i have hopes for ID4 sequel(s)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I'd have hope if I enjoyed the original. That being said, I forgot to include that so far only Bill Pullman is definitely coming back.
