Our Top Story Tonight: New "Star Trek" Trailer Arrives

Those who have checked out my Top 25 Most Anticipated Films of 2013 know that Star Trek Into Darkness is one of my most anticipated films of the year and the summer blockbuster I am most looking forward to. Well, last night a new trailer (and poster) arrived for the film. While it is primarily made up of action shots it also drops some hints as to what the film's story may hold, and possibly clears up the confusion regarding who Benedict Cumbernatch will be playing. The film hits theaters on May 17th and I can't wait.

You can check out the trailer above, and view the poster here, but be sure to check out more interesting tidbits after the jump.

In others news...

  • It was announced this morning that Fast & Furious 6 will be screened in IMAX this May. In addition, Dwayne Johnson (who I will always know as The Rock) has stated that his character from the franchise, who was introduced in the fifth installment, will be getting his own spinoff, which will be released in between Fast Six and the already confirmed seventh movie. I've never seen a Fast & Furious film, but they've always looked like a lot of fun and I plan on watching the films before I check out the sixth film this May. That being said, I don't think I'll be checking it out. I rarely see films in IMAX as it is, and seeing as it's release in the format seems to be somewhat of an afterthought I don't think it will transfer nicely. As for the planned spinoff, I can't say I'm surprised. Johnson has become somewhat of a mini-movie star as of late, and the franchise seems to be printing money at this point. It's almost guaranteed to be a success for the studio.
  • Kiefer Sutherland has joined the cast of Paul W.S. Anderson's Pompeii, which already stars Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) and Kit Harrington ("Game of Thrones"). The film, which is set in 79 A.D., will follow a slave (Harrington) who dreams of buying his freedom and marrying his master's daughter (Browning), but is shocked to discover that she's been promised to a corrupt Roman senator (Sutherland). On top of that, a volcano has just erupted and will destroy the city. Well, nothing about this sounds all that promising to me, but who knows, maybe W.S. Anderson will surprise us this time. The film is set to be released in 2014, the same year that Anderson will release another film, the sixth Resident Evil movie.
  • Melissa McCarthy will be making her directorial debut with her husband next year and it just landed two big stars. The film, titled Tammy, will follow a woman (to be played by McCarthy) who goes on a road trip with her foul mouthed grandmother. Landing the grandmother role is Susan Sarandon, while Kathy Bates is in talks to play the grandmother's best friend. The film sounds interesting and I'm curious to see McCarthy handle a more mature role so I am fairly excited for this one. Plus, as far as I'm concerned, any film starring Sarandon and Bates is worth paying attention to.
  • Kate Winslet has landed a part in the latest YA novel based franchise, Divergent. The cast will be lead by Shailene Woodley, with Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard), Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) and Maggie Q ("Nikita") amongst the supporting cast. I'm tired of YA franchises, so I can't say I'll be too eager to check this film out, but at least Winslet is a talented actress. The film starts production next month.
  • Seth Rogen will write, direct and star in The Interview, a film about a talk show host and producer who finds himself involved in an attempt to assassinate the North Korean prime minister. Rogen wrote the script with his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg (Superbad, The Pineapple Express) and will star as the producer in the film, while Sony has apparently reached out to James Franco for the role of the talk show host. Rogen's directorial debut, This Is the End, will hit theaters this June.
  • Finally, some more Jane Got a Gun news: Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges and Jake Gyllenhaal are all possibilities to fill in for Jude Law, who quit the film yesterday. I'm sure the producers will make their decision quickly so that production can finally get started, but out of those three actors my choice would be Bridges. I'm not a Tobey Maguire fan by any means, and Gyllenhaal is good but somewhat limited in my opinion.
