Our Top Story Tonight: O'Conner is In, Law is Out on This Busy News Day...

It was announced this morning that Gavin O'Conner, director of the widely under appreciated MMA film Warrior, will be taking over directorial duties for Jane's Got a Gun after Lynne Ramsay's shocking exit yesterday. But the production is still having problems as Jude Law, who was set to play the villain, has dropped out of the project. Producers, as well as the film's star Natalie Portman, have remained quiet about troubles the movie has been facing and there is no word on when production will resume, let alone when the film will be released.

This has been a crazy two days for Jane's Got a Gun. For one thing, I can't believe how quickly the studio got another director to hop aboard the project, though I suppose having an Oscar winner like Natalie Portman in the lead role is quite an incentive. Still, something is telling me this film will never actually be made. The production already has such a negative stigma attached to it, and with the film losing a major player in it, one can only wonder if the other actors looking to jump ship as well. If another actor isn't found I wouldn't be surprised if the film gets cancelled.

But this was just one story on a very busy day of film news...

  • Shailene Woodley has just signed on for the lead role in The Fault in Our Stars, based on the book by John Green. The film, which was adapted by the writers of (500) Days of Summer and Woodley's Sundance hit The Spectacular Now, would follow two cancer patients who meet and fall in love during their stay in a treatment center. Woodley is an immensely talented actress and I'm happy to see her take such interesting roles. The Fault in Our Stars sounds like it could be a great film, and a perfect vehicle for Woodley to show off her talent.
  • This is technically yesterday's news, but- it was announced that producers are currently looking to fund a sequel to January's Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Despite only performing modestly in the States, the film has done incredibly well overseas so I suppose a sequel is a no brainer. That being said, I thought the first looked terrible and have no interests in checking out any sequels, but I do hope that Jeremy Renner keeps himself away from this franchise. He doesn't need it.
  • In what's more of a speculative bit of information, MGM confirmed today that the 24th James Bond film is aiming for a 2014 release date and that a new director will be announced shortly. I really enjoyed Skyfall and can't wait for Bond 24, but am happy MGM is taking it's time as it chooses a director as expectations are certainly going to be sky high. My personal directorial pick? I'd love to see Joe Carnahan get his hands on the project.
  • Good news for Edgar Wright fans- his next film, The World's End, has been moved up from October to August 23rd. The film is the second apocalypse comedy to be released this summer, the first being June's This is the End, but I'm sure The World's End will be more anticipated amongst film lovers. It's impressive cast includes Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman.
  • Tom Cruise and Guy Ritchie will be teaming up for The Man From U.N.C.L.E., a spy film based on a television series that, truthfully, I had never heard of until producers started to search for a director and star. Previous stars attached include George Clooney and Channing Tatum, while directors that once showed interest include Steven Soderbergh and Matthew Vaughn.
  • It's heavily rumored that Justin Timberlake will be playing Daddy Warbucks for Will Gluck's upcoming Annie remake, which will star Oscar nominee Quevanzhane Wallis. I really enjoyed Gluck's last two films, but I can't say I'm all to excited for this. But I wouldn't be surprised if this rumor proves to be true, as Timberlake starred in Friends with Benefits for Gluck.
  • Vera Farmiga has landed the female lead in Robert Downey Jr.'s The Judge. Farmiga will play a waitress in the town who has a connection to Downey's character, a lawyer who defends his estranged father who's on trial for killing his wife. The film will also star Robert Duvall, Billy Bob Thorton, Vincent D'Onfrio and Dax Shepard. The project sounds great and Farmiga is a solid actress, so I hope this works out.
  • Christina Applegate has landed the female lead in the reboot of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, opposite Ed Helms. I love Applegate but can't say I'm all too excited about the film itself.
  • Chris O'Dowd, who's best known for his roles in Bridesmaids or HBO's "Girls" has filmed a cameo for Thor: The Dark World in which he'll play a man on a date with Natalie Portman's Jane. I'm not all that excited for the film, as I wasn't a huge fan of the original, but O'Dowd is funny and I'm fine with him providing some comic relief.
  • Finally, the trailer for Turbo found its way online. The film, which follows a snail that wants to compete in NASCAR races, has some stunning animation but in terms of quality this one looks like it's exclusively for young viewers. I won't be seeing the film, which hits theaters in July.
