Our Top Story Tonight: Ready For The 86th Academy Awards?

In an otherwise slow news day, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the key dates for next year's awards season, confirming the suspicion many film lovers have had that the ceremony will be pushed back into March to accommodate the Winter Olympics. Next year's show will take place on March 2, 2014, while nomination voting is set to begin a full ten days later than this year's, on December 27, 2013. The nomination announcement will be held on January 15, while final voting will begin on February 14. The AMPAS also confirmed that the ceremony will return to late February in 2015: February 22, to be exact.

While the move makes sense, I can't say I'm happy with it. To me, the filmgoing calendar is like a sports season that ends on Oscar night and starts anew the next morning. Delaying to March only draws out the competition and will certainly kill some of the momentum for the big night. That being said, this will allow films being released late in the year- like Nicole Kidman's Grace of Monaco and David O. Russell's Abscam project- to campaign more amongst Academy members, which is always a good thing. But, truthfully, I'm not ready to discuss the Oscars yet. You can expect me to return to that topic some time in September.

Check out more news, including a new trailer for one of the summer's big blockbusters, after the jump.

In other news...

  • On Saturday, the second trailer for Brad Pitt's World War Z was revealed. Personally, I think the film looks like a mess and am not interested in the slightest, but I'm sure many others will be. Check it out here, along with this recently released poster. Also of note is that the trailer states the film is going to be released in 3D- something I did not know until now.
  • Speaking of trailers, you can expect one for The Wolverine tomorrow, as well as one for the Channing Tatum led action film White House Down
  • The first poster for the sci-fi adaptation Ender's Game appeared this morning. Truthfully, I don't know much about this series but I did like this poster.
  • Charlize Theron, one of my favorite actresses, has added another interesting film to her slew of soon to be released movies- an untitled thriller about "corrupt vigilantes" which she will produce and star in. On top of that film, she's got Seth Macfarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West, Fred Savage's R-rated comedy Ladies Night and the adaptation of Gillian Flynn's popular novel Dark Places. So, I expect we'll be seeing a lot of her over the next few years- something I certainly don't mind.
  • Finally, something that isn't so much news as it is an interesting tidbit of trivia- Will Smith revealed this week that he turned down the titular role in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained because he didn't consider the character to be the leading man. [Spoilers for Django Unchained to follow] Smith was quoted saying, "Django wasn't the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character [King Schultze] was the lead! I was like 'No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!" Personally, I think the quote makes Smith come off as a bit egocentric- a quality not typically associated with the lovable star- but I feel he made the right choice. As much as I enjoy Smith's work, I don't think he could have pulled off the role like Foxx did.
